In case you missed the latest news dominating the technology headlines recently, the first solar powered airplane has circled the globe and recently, successfully completed its final journey to the United Arab Emirates. The Solar Impulse 2 has been on an interesting journey that has captured the attention of the Green community while sending a powerful message to the rest of the world about solar power.
The idea of building and launching an airplane built to solely use solar power comes from two of the biggest pioneering minds. They have achieved their goals and have created the world’s first solar-powered airplane, and to prove the impossible they have taken it on a flight around the globe, all to create awareness for the solar power cause.
Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg are the two masterminds and their first “around the world flight” using only solar power is going to change things in the aviation industry. An airplane that uses no fuel; the Solar impulse 2 is proof that such goals can be achieved. Not just in the aviation industry but in other industries as well.
A journey to a cleaner world
The flight broke records when it flew for 5 days and 5 nights without fuel, and the global round trip ended in the sun-drenched United Arab Emirates. This is the first step in proving that in the future everyone could be using solar power for flights. It is no longer an eccentric idea but rather a reality! There are no limits to where this technology could be taken in the future. Solar power is the way to go as it is essentially clean energy that emits no harmful gasses or requires fuels made from non-renewable sources.
Just a few years ago, solar powered airplanes would not have been as much as entertained on the drawing board. However, thanks to ongoing development and passion this vision has come alive! Developing the right technology is exceptionally important to create the kind of world where solar power can be something used on a much larger scale.

About the solar powered airplane
Solar Impulse 2 had immense financial backing from the legendary Piccard Family. For three generations this family has been involved in financing exploration. At the forefront of their innovative personalities, there has always been a concern for the environment.
The latest innovator in the Piccard family teamed up with an incredible entrepreneurial mind to bring the Solar Impulse 2 to life. Bertrand Piccard, Andre Borschberg, and a highly skilled team came together to turn what was once a dream into reality.
The solar power airplane has been almost 20 years in the making. With the idea launched in 1999, the first prototype was built between 2007 and 2009, after years of planning, research and financing. In 2010 it lifted off and many test flights were undertaken before the trip around the world was undertaken.

Why solar power?
There might be a few renewable energy choices out there these days, but solar power still comes out on top every time. Why? Well after the initial set up and cost output, solar power is extremely cost effective.
Like solar geysers and solar panels found on the roofs of many homes, machinery can be similarly fit with the technology that will be used to produce solar driven power. Why use fossil fuels to power homes and industries when solar energy is available? Why use diesel or petrol when cars can be powered in a more environmentally friendly way? Solar power has a lot of potential, and this flight around the world is certainly paving the way towards other solar developments and innovations.
